Braye-sous-Faye is a very old commune. It has been occupied since the Neolithic period. Numerous sarcophagi have been found, the stones from which were used to build houses, enclosure walls and even part of the bell tower. 

The commune was the birthplace of the Cardinal de Richelieu family and was one of the two vigueries (the viguier dispensed justice) in the area.

Description

  1. Leaving the town in the direction of the Gandouin and Pinsard mills, walk along the surrounding wall of the Richelieu park. The mills are a reminder that the Richelieu region had an exceptional density of water mills on the Veude, Mâble and Bourouse rivers, as well as windmills in the west of the canton.

  2. The dry grasslands and forest edges are home to rare plant species such as the ‘reseda phyteuma’ and the ‘pulsatilla anemone’.

  3. Arriving at ‘Gué des Moines’, whose name evokes a past when bridges were rare and river crossings adventurous, cross the Bois de Fougeray.

  4. The route runs alongside the Château de Poulesse, built in the 19th century by sub-prefect Hulin, owner of the Richelieu estate.
