Description

  1. Braye-sous-Faye is a very old commune. It has been occupied since the Neolithic period. Numerous sarcophagi have been found, the stones from which were used to build houses, enclosure walls and even part of the bell tower.

  2. The commune was the birthplace of the Cardinal de Richelieu family and was one of the two vigueries (the viguier dispensed justice) in the area.

  3. In the Middle Ages, Faye-la-Vineuse was an important baronial estate. The commune was home to almost 10,000 inhabitants and 3 parishes. The Romanesque collegiate church stands on top of a primitive 11th-century church. The village has preserved some of its fine houses and winding streets.

  4. The descent from Faye-la-Vineuse to Champ Marteau offers a fine view of the Richelais plateau. The return journey to Braye-sous-Faye takes you past the Château de Poulesse.
