Neuil is a particularly quiet village.
It boasts an interesting architectural heritage, including a 12th-century church, two washhouses, numerous troglodytic houses, fortified farms, a fortified castle (La Charpraie), a seigniorial dwelling (La Gagneraie),.....

As you stroll through the woods, you may come across traces of large animals (deer, roe deer, wild boar, ....).

Description

  1. The tour begins at Place de la Mairie. The 11th/12th-century church, dedicated to St Perpet, is flanked by a handsome bell tower topped by an elegant octagonal spire. On the street side, you'll find a beautiful door adorned with six human masks.
  2. Once past the calvary and across the main road, Rue du Marron opens onto more or less recent settlements.... This area was hollowed out when tufa stone was quarried for building purposes in the 19th century.
  3. Once you've crossed this street, the landscape opens up with a view of the village of Neuil.
  4. If you take the path leading to the Crissay forest, the landscape alternates between woods, farmland and fallow land.
  5. Le Petit Bois offers a peaceful forest atmosphere. It's a regular forest, i.e. a forest made from seedlings or natural regeneration, where all the trees are the same age. This type of forest produces high quality, even-growing wood, suitable for the noblest and most valuable uses. This is a very wet area known as La Patouille, where a diverse fauna of salamanders, newts and large game animals live side by side.
  6. View of the Charpaie farm (a former fortified farm).
  7. After passing the communal lake, you enter the Bois de l'Éventard, where you'll find the ruins of an old charcoal-making forest house.
  8. In the Bois de la Guetterie, the atmosphere alternates between canopied paths and more open landscapes beside fields of sunflowers. At the end of the wood, the large Touches farm can be seen.
  9. The forest atmosphere continues in the Bois des Planchettes.... After passing the restored houses of La Fosse, the path becomes very narrow to reach the beautiful Pont Salmois building.
  10. The road to Les Bigottières runs alongside the beautiful Pont Salmois lake.
  11. Following the Maugonne stream, the path is lined with numerous caves and troglodytic dwellings.
  12. As you approach the village, you'll find two magnificent, recently renovated washhouses. Near the first, known as the Lavoir de la Fontaine, you can see the former 16th-century logis seigneurial de la Gagneraie, of which all that remains is the semicircular entrance door and the rest of the ruined gables of the dwelling.
