Home of vineyards and history between Loire, Layon and Aubance
South of Angers stretch the vineyards of the Layon and Aubance hillsides, alongside with historic châteaux, listed villages and breathtaking panoramic views of the Loire River.
The Layon Valley: cultural heritage and exceptional wines
Renowned for its liqueur wine, the secrets of which can be discovered at “The Vine and Wine Museum of Anjou”, the steep-sided valley of the Layon gives home to picturesque villages, two of which are listed for their remarkable cultural heritage: Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, « pearl of Layon », and Aubigné-sur-Layon, labeled « Petite Cité de caractère » (Small place with character), a lively place, covered in flowers.
From Chalonnes-sur-Loire to Rochefort-sur-Loire: the Anjou Cliff
The Layon flows into the Royal River at Chalonnes-sur-Loire, the gateway to the Loire Valley, designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the starting point of the Anjou Cliff, which culminates at an altitude of 100 meters. Its panoramic road provides beautiful views of the Louet and the Loire Rivers up to Rochefort-sur-Loire.
The memory of the coal mines in Ardenay
An thematic trail between Chalonnes and Chaudefonds-sur-Layon links cultural heritage sites: the Sainte-Barbe-des-Mine chapel, the miner’s graveyard, their former café, the mills of Ardenay, the old coal mine and the Malécots Trench, a remarkable geological and botanical site.
Château, cités classées et coteaux de l’Aubance
Denée, labeled « Petite Cité de caractère » (Small place with character), a charming village perched on a rocky spur, is a lookout over the valley. Brissac-Quincé is situated between forest and vineyard and got the highest château in France (seven storeys!). The medieval village of Blaison-Gohier developed around a castle, a collegiate church and ravishing alleyways. Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne, on the banks of the Loire River, is distinguished by its rich built heritage: its priory with the polychrome Renaissance fireplace was one of the richest in Anjou.
From the port of La Possonnière to the château of Serrant
From the north side of the Loire River, the port of La Possonnière offers a magnificent view of the Loire islands and the traditional boats. Enclosed by its beautiful English landscape park, the château of Serrant, surrounded by moats, owes its reputation to its well-preserved furniture and its extraordinary library (12,000 old books!).
