Description
- The Coutures plain
For centuries, the Plaine de Coutures has been a small basin covered with alluvial deposits, making it a sought-after agricultural area. Vines were first planted here several centuries ago. Elegant red wines are produced here, with the "Anjou village" appellation. Since the 19th century, artichokes, introduced 300 years earlier under the reign of Catherine de Médicis, have been grown here. The production of the variety "le gros vert de Laon", known in the region as "le parisien", after the Camus de Bretagne war, made this plain famous. Today, production is limited to the needs of the local market. - Manoir de la Caillère
This manor house, which is open to visitors, is unusual in that its façade is adorned with architectural elements taken from the choir of the former Coutures church, destroyed in 1706. These elements, dating from the 13th century, include sculpted friezes, statues, baskets of flowers and fruit... Inside an underground gallery, the painter Richard Rak exhibits his work, and a cabinet of curiosities also presents his creative process. his creative process. - Château de Montsabert
Built in the 13th century by the de Laval family, Château de Montsabert retains two vaulted rooms from this period. In the 16th century, Bertrand du Guesclin transformed it into a fortress. With the construction of the loggia, the elevation of the courtyard walls and the false balustrade, the château was brought into line with Renaissance taste. At the end of the 17th century, the windows were enlarged, and the orangery and chapel were built. And the southern rampart was razed to make way for a terrace with formal gardens.
